Match the walk to the group
Consider the least experienced walker, the ground underfoot and the daylight available. A short mountain walk may still involve steep, exposed or unmarked terrain. Choose a lower or shorter alternative when needed.
Check more than one weather detail
Look at wind, rain, temperature and visibility, alongside official warnings. Weather high in the Mournes can differ from the coast. Our modelled forecast is one planning input; it cannot tell you whether a walk is safe.

Pack for a change of plans
- Suitable footwear, warm layers and waterproof clothing.
- A map and compass, with the skills to use them.
- Food, water, a headtorch, whistle and first-aid supplies.
- A charged phone and a backup power source; do not rely on reception.
Tell someone your intended route and expected return. Keep the group together and be prepared to turn back.
Care for the Mournes
Follow access signs, close gates, take litter home and keep dogs under control. Avoid disturbing livestock and wildlife. Leave fires and barbecues out of mountain and forest plans.
If you need help in the mountains
Keep your phone available for a return call. Follow the emergency operator’s instructions.
